Rationale for ICT in the curicculum

With continuously emerging ICT a reality in today's world, literacy is necessary to use the computer effectively and to fully exploit its potential for learning (Kist2005; Leu 2000). This new literacy is grounded in reading and writing but it also requires knowledge, skills and insights to meet the technological demands that is needed in this type of environment.

There must be a rationale for integrating ICT into the curicculum. This rationale is based on the following principles as they relate to technology based learning:
1. Interactivity. Students must be able to manipulate texts, and text is responsive to students' needs, interests, purposes.
2. Information search and retrieval. There a lot of search engines that are found on the internet and of course this would help in the development of research skills and the organization of data collection.
3.Communication. There are a lot of collaboration with peers and people from around the world
4. Socially mediated learning. Students' working together are able to build meaning as part of literacy learning.
Multimedia environment. Images, sound and text are engaging for our students and extends to their understanding. (Vacca and Vacca, 2008)
